Porquê esta manifestação hoje, dia 8 de Agosto, dia em que têm início os JO de Pequim ?

Porque o governo Chinês utilizou os preparativos para os Jogos Olímpicos para, em nome da segurança interna, aumentar tremendamente a repressão sobre os Tibetanos no Tibete.

Hoje, dia em que as atenções internacionais se encontram focadas em Pequim, queremos chamar a atenção para o Tibete e para as contínuas violações de direitos, prisões arbitrárias, detenções sumárias, mortes e agressões que diariamente são cometidas pelo governo Chinês, sobre o povo Tibetano.

Porque no Tibete não há liberdade de Imprensa, liberdade de expressão, liberdade religiosa.

Porque o Tibete continua sob ocupação Chinesa desde 1950, ocupação essa profundamente indesejada pelo povo Tibetano.

Daí os protestos de 1987 em Lhasa, e há cinco meses atrás assistimos ao seu exarcebar em todo o planalto Tibetano.

Desde então quase 7,000 Tibetanos foram detidos e mais de 1,000 continuam desaparecidos.

Week of Olympic protests

A group denouncing China's censors made an on-air challenge to the Beijing Olympics on Friday in a week of protests, and a deadly attack in the far west.

* Aug 4 - Suspected Islamist separatists kill 16 police in China's restive far-west Xinjiang region, an attack the government said was aimed at disrupting the Games.

* Aug 5 - U.S. speedskater and Olympic gold medallist Joey Cheek, co-founder of Team Darfur group of athletes that campaigns for an end to the crisis in Sudan's Darfur region, says China has revoked his visa so he will not attend the Games.

* Aug 6 - Four foreign Tibet activists scale power poles near the Bird's Nest National Stadium and unfurl Tibet independence banners, as the Olympic torch makes its way through the streets of Beijing.

-- Police detain the activists, two Britons and two Americans. They are deported the following day.

-- Three prominent Chinese activists are blocked from entering Hong Kong, the venue for Olympic equestrian events.

-- A small group of U.S. Christians stage a brief protest for religious freedom on Beijing's central Tiananmen Square before being briefly detained.

* Aug 7 - About 2,000 Tibetans and their Nepali supporters take part in peaceful protests in Kathmandu, calling for the release of Tibetan monks and nuns jailed in China.

-- Three U.S. Christians return to Tiananmen Square and hold a brief news conference and prayer vigil before being dragged off on their knees by plain clothes security.

* Aug 8 - Paris-based press watchdog Reporters Without Borders broadcasts an on-air challenge to China's censors and urge the release of political prisoners.

-- In Hong Kong, a lone protester unfurls banners calling for respect for human rights in China on the southern city's largest suspension bridge.

Berlin, August 6, 2008 - Only a few days ahead of the Olympic opening ceremony in Beijing more than 100 international athletes give a strong signal for human rights in China.

The athletes, amongst them a number of former and current Olympic participants such as World Champions Blanka Vlasic, Michael Groß or Irving Saladino, appeal in an open letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao to respect human rights.

The appeal has been initiated by „Sports for Peace“ (www.sportsforpeace.de). Amnesty International and the International Campaign for Tibet welcome the statement and express their solidarity with the athletes who joined the appeal. The appeal is published in the “International Herald Tribune“ today.

The athletes appeal to President Hu Jintao:

· to enable a peaceful solution for the issue of Tibet and other conflicts in your country with respect to fundamental principles of human rights.

· to protect freedom of expression, freedom of religion and freedom of opinion in your country, including Tibet.

· to ensure that human rights defenders are no longer intimidated or imprisoned.

· to stop the death penalty.

The measures taken on these issues will have a strong influence on the outcome of the Olympic Games and the image the world will have of China in the future, concludes the appeal.

Quatro activistas detidos em Pequim

A polícia Chinesa deteve hoje, em Pequim, quatro activistas após estes terem colocado estandartes "Free Tibet" no exterior do Estádio Nacional de Pequim, onde amanhã decorrerá a cerimónia de abertura dos Jogos.

Três homens e uma mulher da organização Students for a Free Tibet subiram, esta madrugada, a dois postes de electricidade frente ao estádio e colocaram os estandartes onde podia ser lido "Tibet will be free" e "One World, One Dream". De um dos bolsos dos activistas voava a bandeira Tibetana.

Uma hora após cinco camiões surgiram e os manifestantes foram pacificamente levados pela polícia e forças de segurança interna Chinesas.

Até ao momento não foi possível estabelecer contacto com os activistas devido ao facto dos seus telefones se encontrarem desligados.

Greve de fome indefinida finalizou

Os seis Tibetanos em greve de fome indefinida foram hoje levados para o hospital.

Os seis encontravam-se já no nono dia da greve de fome, não tendo ingerido sequer água desde o seu início, em Jantar Mantar na capital Indiana. Todos se encontram em situação muito crítica tendo ainda resistido a serem levados para o hospital Ram Manohar Lohia.

Os cerca de 130 apoiantes presentes no local tentaram pacificamente impedir o acesso policial Indiano aos Tibetanos em greve de fome. Cerca de 86 Tibetanos foram detidos, incluíndo quatro monjas e o secretário geral do Tibetan Youth Congress.
